Moon Baskets

There’s something quietly beautiful about gathering small things that bring comfort, calm, and joy. A moon basket is a little collection of items to support you or your daughter through your moon time, that tender phase of rest and renewal. It’s not about perfection or about having the “right” things; it’s about creating a space that feels nurturing and personal.

When we make a moon basket, it’s a way to honour the body, celebrate the changes it goes through, and give ourselves permission to slow down. The items inside can be anything that brings a sense of comfort, for example:

Moon Basket Example

  • A hot water bottle or heated wheat bag

  • A soft blanket or cuddly toy

  • A favourite book or film

  • Some chocolate or a small treat

  • Herbal teas and a special mug

  • A candle or essential oils, like lavender

  • A journal and pen

  • Affirmation or inspiration cards

  • Bath salts

  • Favourite period products

  • Iron-supplements

  • Anything else that feels comforting or joyful

Over the year, the girls are invited to gather the items they would like to include in their moon baskets, and in the November circle, they will bring their baskets in to share with their friends. This is a wonderful moment of connection, celebration, and inspiration — seeing the different ways each girl nurtures and cares for herself.

Making a moon basket together with your daughter can also be a gentle way to open conversations at home. It’s an opportunity to talk about how she wants to be cared for and how she might let the family know when her period starts. She might choose to leave a note, a small symbol, or simply tell you. It’s about giving her choice and agency over her own body, and helping her feel safe and supported.

It’s just as important for mums to create a moon basket for themselves. By modelling self-care and slowing down, we show our daughters that our cycles are something to honour and celebrate. Your basket might hold a favourite candle, a nourishing book, herbal tea, or anything that helps you reconnect with yourself.

Some families like to bring a little extra ritual to the practice. An inter-seasons clock can be a beautiful tool to notice the shifts of energy through the month and pair with the moon basket. But even without it, the act of gathering and using these items is meaningful.

A moon basket is not about doing everything perfectly or having all the things. It’s about creating a small space of care and comfort. Whether it’s a basket on a shelf, a box under the bed, or a simple pouch tucked away, it is an act of love toward yourself. Start small, let it grow, and each time you reach for it, let it remind you that you are worthy of rest, softness, and care.
